About a month ago, Jacob's hamster "The King" performed one too many acrobatic moves and died. He was more like a monkey than a hamster. Hanging off the bars, swinging from one end of the cage to the other upside down.

Last week Nick's Hamster "Sally" joined "The King" in Hamster Heaven. I was actually quite sad to see this one go. He liked me. I could hold him in my hands and he wouldn't even bite!
Our Garden has become a small Hamster graveyard. Complete with pencil stakes and hand drawn paper markers. We buried the hamsters in tea box coffins (the perfect size). Jacob included a special colouring page of Thomas the Tank Engine with "The King".We just don't seem to have any luck with the little rodents. Five hamsters in 2 years. I have reassured the boys that they are all running together on a BIG wheel in Hamster Heaven.
We had a bunny once too. Her name was Daphne. Jacob was allergic to her so we had to give her away. She was cute but chewed on everything.

We have had our goldfish Woody for 5 years which is pretty amazing if you ask me. Buzz hung out with her until about 2 years ago until we flushed her free.
Pets are great for kids. They are a good way to learn about life and death and responsibility and chores. The boys (including the big one) now want a dog. I love animals. Growing up, I always had a pet. Muffy was our black cocker spaniel that was part of our family for years. I think The Ferwerda Four should stick to the goldfish for now. We don't have the time to spend with each other, nevermind adding another member. Maybe down the road we'll look at a Boxer or a Golden Retriever but until then there is always the virtual dogs for Nintendo DS!

So what you are saying is that plants and animals...both do not fair well in your house. The good news is that the boys and your husband do. Thank goodness it wasn't the other way around!
