Larry Findlater. When I saw that name pop up as a friend request on Facebook today, I didn't know whether to cry or smile. Tears.
I met Larry when I worked at BX93 in 1990 to 1992. We were copywriters together, locked away in a closet of an office that was decorated with Dallas Cowboy stuff on his side and Gumby stuff on mine. We shared the woes of work and after hour drinks. We even got stuck on a roller coaster at Canada's Wonderland together. And it was Larry's matchmaking skills that brought Ron and I together. I met Ron at a gathering Larry had one night after work at the Elephant and Castle. The next day Larry asked me, "Laura, Ron thinks you are really nice. If he asked you out would you go?" "Sure," I answered, "He seems like a nice guy." That night he was speaking to Ron and said "Laura thinks you are really cute and she really wants you to ask her out." So... the following weekend Ron and I had our first date and the rest is history.
This seems like a happily ever after story, however there is a sad twist. Larry recently turned 40 and has been battling MS for over 10 years. I haven't seem him since we both left the station in 1992. The change in his appearance from our radio days to the pictures and video posted on Facebook is heart wrenching. He doesn't look like the same Larry. But, then I got reading. He still has the fantastic sense of humour I was so drawn to. He still has the creativity that was untouchable. He still has the same smile and the same laugh. He still has the drive for life that anyone could learn from.
Lare reminds me that life carries on no matter what. You might as well enjoy each and every step along the way because you never know what tomorrow will bring.
