Last night Jake was VERY emotional. When I asked him what was wrong he said in a very teary voice “I don’t want to go to school. I want to stay home with you.” This morning he wouldn't eat. I managed to get some toast and honey into him before heading to school for the afternoon.
Jake was a bundle of nerves but he did great! He placed his bag on the fence, like he was told to do, received his “My name is Jake” tag from his teacher and went to play in the sand. When the bell rang the kids all lined up and off they trotted inside to their classroom. He clung to me in the line up but put on a brave little smile and a wave before he disappeared behind the big school doors.
By the time I got home my eyes were pretty pink (to match the rest of me.) Kids are so little now when they start school. They are just learning to wipe their bums for heavens sakes and they are shipped off to a classroom.
When I picked him up at the end of the day he was beaming. He had a great day, loves his teacher and even made a new little friend. When I asked him his new friend's name he said "I forget mommy, he's the guy with the spiderman shirt." That certainly narrowed it down.
He looked so little and so big all at the same time. No matter how big he gets though, he'll always be my baby boy!

It's a very exciting, teary, scary and exhilirating time all at once. They are so big and still so small all at the same time. If only they knew they have 12 more years of it....lots of time to enjoy. The only difference is in a couple of years, they will want you to drop them off at the corner with a quick or even non existent hug because they are "too big". I guess we should enjoy now.
